Fall River — Baker Sign Works will lift its marquee on the waterfront soon.
The company will leave its home in the historic restored firehouse at 1058 Pleasant St. and will move into the historic restored mill on Ferry Street, Linda Baker said.
“We’re expanding into a larger location,” she said. “The company is going strong and I need more staff.
“We are moving into the Borden Light Marina property, into a space near the Tipsy Toboggan.”
Baker Sign Works currently employs Baker and three others. She said she will hire two more people soon as the company has the room to grow.
The former mill building at 75 Ferry St. is owned by Ferry Street Boat Barn LLC, which is a subsidiary of Borden Light Marina. Michael Lund, the owner of Borden Light Marina, is a signatory on the incorporation papers for Ferry Street Boat Barn LLC.
It is a building with fieldstone walls and thick wood timbers holding up the roof. Baker Sign Works will lease a space with high garage doors opening into the building. Workers for Borden Light Marina were in there Thursday, cleaning the space.
“We were looking for space with a garage,” Baker said. “We do partial wraps on vehicles. That has been picking up for us. We are doing two or three vehicles per week.
“It was important for us to stay in Fall River. Mike’s space was available and provides what we need, so we took it.”
The company’s new headquarters will face the Tipsy Toboggan. It had been used to store boats, but was freed when Lund bought the property at 52 Ferry St. earlier this year.
It is a large open space, 30 yards wide by 100 yards deep, with 25-foot ceilings.
The company designs and builds interior signs, exterior signs, banners, awnings and trade show displays. “What we do is all custom design work,” Baker said. “We do some big signs, so we need a big space.
“We do a lot of boats, too, so we’ll be right here for it.”
Baker Sign Works started in 2008. It is located in the Old Flint Firehouse, built in 1873 for horse-drawn fire apparatus.
“The building is for sale,” Baker said. “One person interested in buying it told us we would not be able to stay.
“We need more space anyway, so it seemed like a good time to move.” She added: “Things are happening on the waterfront. We are really anxious to join it.” The building at 1058 Pleasant St. is listed on Loopnet for $579,900. It is described as a 10,684square-foot building with commercial space on the first floor and three apartments on the second.
At the space on Ferry Street on Thursday, workers were scraping a protective cover from the wide hardwood planks that make up the floor. Baker said she expects to move within the next month or so. “There are restaurants nearby and we can walk along the waterfront at lunch,” she said. “We are looking forward to being there.”
